Dog-Friendly Beaches Near Eastbourne: A Seasonal Guide
There's nothing quite like watching your freshly groomed pup charge headlong into the surf, sand flying in every direction, tail wagging with pure, unbridled joy. If you're based near Eastbourne and wondering where your mud-loving companion can legally romp on the beach — and when — we've put together this handy seasonal guide to help you plan your coastal adventures.
Understanding Eastbourne's Beach Restrictions
Like most seaside towns, Eastbourne enforces seasonal dog restrictions on certain stretches of beach to keep things fair for everyone. Generally, the restricted period runs from 1 May to 30 September, during which dogs are banned from the main bathing beaches between the Wish Tower and the Redoubt. Outside of those dates, your four-legged friend has much more freedom.
"A tired dog is a happy dog — and a sandy, salty, grinning dog is the happiest of all."
Year-Round Dog-Friendly Beaches
The good news? Several beaches near Eastbourne welcome dogs all year round. Here are some of our favourites:
- Holywell Beach — Tucked beneath the cliffs at the western end of Eastbourne, this pebbly beach allows dogs throughout the year. It's quieter, scenic, and perfect for a post-groom paddle.
- Birling Gap — A National Trust gem just a short drive west. Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round (on leads near the café area). The dramatic chalk cliffs make for a spectacular backdrop.
- Cuckmere Haven — A stunning shingle beach at the mouth of the Cuckmere River. Dogs can explore freely, and the walk down from the car park is gorgeous.
- Normans Bay — Head a little east and you'll find this peaceful, largely undiscovered stretch of sand and shingle. Dogs welcome all year.

Tips for a Brilliant Beach Day
- Rinse after the romp. Saltwater and sand can irritate your dog's skin and undo all that lovely grooming. A quick freshwater rinse works wonders.
- Bring fresh water. Dogs get thirsty quickly, and drinking seawater is a one-way ticket to an upset tummy.
- Check the tides. Some beaches, particularly Birling Gap, can become very narrow at high tide. Plan around it.
- Pack poo bags. Always. No exceptions. Let's keep these beautiful beaches open to dogs by being responsible.
- Keep an eye on cliffs. The chalk cliffs along this stretch of coast are actively eroding. Keep your dog (and yourself) well clear of the base and the edge.
Post-Beach Groom: Why It Matters
Sand has an uncanny ability to work its way into every fold, ear, and paw pad. Saltwater left to dry can make coats brittle and skin itchy. A proper post-beach groom — or better yet, booking a session with us at Love Mud — will keep your dog's coat healthy, tangle-free, and ready for the next adventure. We're used to dealing with the aftermath of a good beach session, so don't be shy about bringing them in looking a bit wild.
Our Favourite Walk-to-Beach Route
If you fancy making a real day of it, try parking at the Seven Sisters Country Park and walking the river path down to Cuckmere Haven. It's flat, scenic, and your dog will be beside themselves with excitement. The beach itself is remote enough that you'll often have great stretches all to yourselves — especially on weekday mornings.
Whatever the season, the East Sussex coastline has something wonderful to offer you and your dog. Just check the local signage when you arrive, keep your pup under control near wildlife, and embrace the glorious mess. That's what we're here for.
